Ready for Winter?

Is Your Home Ready For Winter?

Is your home ready for winter? That cold weather and the storms that come with it are sure to be here soon. There is a lot you can do to help keep your home in tip-top shape during any winter storms your area encounters. Take a look at some of these preventative measures you can take to minimize any damage to your property this winter.

Here is a short list of preparations you can do before the snow starts falling:

  • Check roof tiles, shutters, siding, and other exterior materials to ensure they’re secure. You don’t want anything flying loose mid winter! Keep yourself warm by making sure everything is in place now.
  • Seal air leaks around the home to keep it warmer (and save energy costs). This includes caulking windows and doors and checking the seals around doors.
  • Insulate all exposed plumbing pipes to prevent burst pipes
  • Trim tree branches away from your roof to prevent roof damage. You can also check for broken branches that could fall during a storm.  If you want to trim shrubs and bushes for aesthetic reasons, remember that most of the time it’s best to wait until later in winter when plants have been dormant.
  • Did you know that most ceiling fans have a reverse switch? If yours does, make sure your fan is spinning in a clockwise direction in order to push down the hot air that rises.

One last to-do item! You will also want to be sure to clean your gutters.  This is not only important to prevent ice dams in winter, but can help prevent other damages throughout the year. Thanks to House Logic for some of these great tips!
