Visit the Catoctin Mountains

What better time to explore Frederick than the Fall.  A visit to the Catoctin Mountains is just what is needed at this time of year. The leaves are changing, the weather is cooler and there are plenty of places to go and enjoy yourself after your visit to the mountains.

About the Catoctin Mountains

Fall Visit to Catoctin Mountains

Probably the most well known fact about the Catoctin Mountains, is that it is home to Camp David, the popular weekend getaway for our U.S. Presidents. And who can blame them, with its close proximity to Washington, D.C. and beautiful mountain views, it’s easy to see why they choose to visit!

A lesser known piece of information is that the name, Catoctin, is said to be derived from a local Indian Tribe, the Kittoctons.

Plan  Your Visit

The National Park Service is an abundance of wealth when it comes to visiting any national park. Here you can read about the various hiking trails, camping, fall walks, kids activities and handicap accessible features.

After Your Mountain Visit

After you’ve thoroughly enjoyed all that the mountain has to offer, you have your choice of places to relax. One option of course is to always visit downtown Frederick. The shopping and eating scene there is unlike any other. There really isn’t a single bad restaurant.  Read our previous blog post about some of our favorite Frederick places if you’d like some ideas!

Springfield Manor

Springfield Manor

A newer option is the Springfield Manor, which offers a winery, distillery and brewery! And it is less than 15 minutes from the Catoctin State Park. Enjoy their drinks, food and often times, live music!
